Strategize - Project Abstract

Strategize is a coalition-building project originating in Bethlehem, Ohio, a small rural town in Southeast Ohio. The most recent survey of youth alcohol and other drug use in Bethlehem reveals that some types of drug use are on the rise and that alcohol use has remained the same despite several projects aimed at reducing underage drinking. Focus groups were also held to discuss the alcohol and other drug problem in Bethlehem. Through these focus groups with parents, youth, and school personnel convened in the Fall of 2002, we learned that young people have no difficulty getting alcohol from merchants in this community, that marijuana is also used widely, and that there is a growing concern over heroin in the community.

Strategize is the brainchild of a group of concerned citizens and agencies who organized following the 2001 focus groups with the purpose of addressing alcohol and other drug use in a comprehensive, strategic way. The goal of Strategize is to improve indicators of alcohol and other drug use, as outlined in the Healthy People 2010 substance abuse objectives for the Nation. The method to reach those goals is through the orchestrated effort of a community-wide citizen group comprised of juvenile justice professionals, law officers, media, faith leaders, school personnel, health care providers, and city government. Youth will work alongside these adults to organize and implement the most effective strategies for reaching the coalition’s goal.

In a quasi- experimental design, the community will use a team of researchers under the leadership of Dr. Great Researcher, College of Education, Division of Human Services, Health Promotion Program to evaluate the results of Strategize efforts by comparing student responses on the PRIDE survey; through the collection of archival data within local agencies; and immediate outcome and output data from training sessions and community events to determine achievement of project goals and objectives.
